Eurostat: Romania ranks fourth In the EU by wheat crop in 2022
With a crop of 9.18 million tons of wheat harvested from 2.1 million hectares Romania placed fourth in the European Union (EU) in 2022, data from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, showed on 2 December 2023.
Spain and Italy follow on the fifth spot among EU’s five biggest producers.
France is EU’s biggest wheat producer, with an output of 34.6 million tons in 2022, down 5% on the year, as per calculations by Ziarul Financiar (ZF) based on Eurostat data. Germany comes next with 22.7 million tons and Poland with 13.2 million tons, the same source shows.
Wheat output grew only in Germany and Poland year-over-year in 2022 and decreased in Romania, France and Italy. Nevertheless, the spots held by the top five players have not changed compared to 2021. In terms of average production, France obtained seven tons/hectare, Germany got 7.6 tons/hectare, Poland had 5.2 tons/hectare and Romania obtained 4.2 tons/hectare. The Netherlands had the biggest yield of 8.6 tons/hectare, double versus Romania’s. Thus, Romania has yet to improve in terms of yield per hectare.
