Romania’s wine production at decade high: 5.2 million hectoliters
Romania’s wine production is put at 5.2 million hectoliters this year, more than 20% higher than in 2017 and the highest in a decade, data from the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) show.
“It’s been an exceptional year for wine production – quantitatively speaking. Such a year comes about once every decade. However, it is hard to have both quantity and quality, you usually get low quantity and exceptional quality and the other way round,” says Cristian Podar, co-owner of winemaker Villa Vinea.
The 5.2 million hectoliters put Romania on the 12th place in the world and 6th in Europe, breathing down Portugal’s neck, one of the big names on the international market.
“In Romania, wine production is estimated at 5.2 million hectoliters. After four years of production at an average level, 2018 should exceed the already very high levels of 2013 (the best year after 2008, according to statistics i.e.),” OIV data show.
Several European countries had a good year for wine production in 2018, seeing growth of more than 20% and even 31% in Germany’s case. On the other hand, Portugal saw a 25% decline in production due to rainy weather. Romania is among the lucky countries.
“2018 was the best year ever quantity-wise for Cramele Liliac,” says Miron Radic, CEO of Liliac winery in Transylvania.
