GfK Romania: FMCG Sector Grows 8.4% in 1H/2018
Romania’s fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector grew an annual 8.4% in the first half of the year, driven by inflation (+4%, double compared with the first half of 2017) and higher volumes, according to a study by market research firm GfK.
As regards consumer behavior, families in Romanian bought fast moving consumer goods more often and paid nearly 5% more per store visit. In the first half, the average Romanian family spent RON3,500 on fast moving consumer goods, RON270 more than in the first half of 2017.
Personal hygiene products were purchased more often and grew 14% in value in the first half, the study showed. Home care products grew 10%, food products grew in line with the general market (around 9%), while the beverage segment grew 6%.
Modern retail continued to gain ground and over 60% of Romanians bought their fast moving consumer goods from such store formats. Supermarkets posted the highest growth, followed by discount stores and convenience stores. Hypermarkets continue to hold the biggest market share.
Romania's FMCG market grew 14.4% last year, to EUR2.98 billion.
