Romania’s Exotic Fruit Imports Up To EUR 217M In 2016
Imports of exotic fruit reached EUR217 million in Romania last year, up from merely EUR90 million five years ago. Bananas account for almost two thirds of those imports, but the avocado, pineapple and mango imports are seeing the fastest growth rate.
Romania therefore imported more than EUR 125 million worth of bananas or about 178,000 tons last year, an increase of 2.6 times in the past five years, ZF has calculated from Eurostat data.
“Bananas are very popular for several reasons: price, convenience and nostalgia, in that they used to be fruit everyone wanted before 1989. They aren’t that special nutrition-wise, but they are sweet and ease hunger. Much healthier and more nutritious would be the tree ripe exotic fruit, but they are too expensive for the Romanian market,” nutritionist Cristian Margarit told ZF.
Avocado imports saw the highest growth rate in the past five years, from EUR 1.3 million in 2012 to EUR 9 million last year.
Romania also imported more than EUR47 million worth of oranges, almost EUR 19 million worth of grapefruit, EUR 9 million worth of kiwi and about some EUR 7 million worth of pineapple last year, according to Eurostat data.
