Poland: a nation of egg eaters?
Poles eat an average of 150 eggs per person per year. But over one tenth of this sum: arount 18 eggs per person is eaten during Easter.
Production and consumption
Poland has been high on the European Union egg market for years, taking third place and accounting for 17% of EU production, after Spain and Germany. According to estimates, the annual production of table eggs is approximately 10 billion pieces.
Polish farmers also hold a leading position in egg exports. According to data from the Polish Ministry of Finance, in 2021 Poland sold 141,000. tons of eggs for EUR 160 million, of which 116 thousand tons for the EU market.
Poles export most eggs to Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Egg imports in Poland are small, estimated at EUR 7 million.
Egg prices
The three main reasons for the increase in egg prices are
- the increase in the prices of feed for chickens,
- the increase in the prices of labor and
- means of production such as energy, fuels and fertilizers, and the costs associated with the development of export production.
In recent years, bird flu has also been added to these factors. However, changes related to animal welfare are one of the least important factors influencing changes in egg prices.
According to the World Health Organization, you should eat about 10 eggs a week. You can eat more proteins alone. In Denmark and Austria, one person eats about 240 eggs a year. German or French - about 220. Over the last five years, Poles have statistically consumed from 139 to 162 eggs per person per year. This is approximately 13 eggs per week.
