HPAI outbreak in Poland

The Chief Veterinary Officer in Poland informed on December 2nd, 2020 about an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) on a poultry farm based on the results of laboratory tests received on the same day.

The HPAI outbreak (subtype H5N8) was confirmed at the farm with 117 108 turkeys for fattening in Nakory in the Suchożebry commune, in Mazowieckie region (close to Warsaw)

It is the 34 HPAI outbreak in 2020 in the territory of the Republic of Poland and the second outbreak in the second half of this year.

In the first half of 2020, 32 HPAI outbreaks in poultry were identified, the last of which was found on March 31, 2020. In addition, 3 HPAI outbreaks were found on December 31, 2019.

As of August 13, 2020, Poland regained the status of a country free from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

Area of forests increasing

The area of forests in Poland is systematically increasing. In 2019, it amounted to 9.259 thousand ha and was higher by almost 4 thousand ha compared to the previous year. Polish vegetable export is growing despite the pandemic

The value of Polish vegetable exports in January-July this year. amounted to EUR 657 million compared to EUR 701 million in the corresponding period of 2019. This is a decrease of 5.8%.

The strongest negative impact on the export performance in this category was not caused by the pandemic, but by last year's drought, which reduced the export opportunities of the vegetable industry. The impact of the pandemic is visible in the export of processed vegetables, incl. in French fries exports which were hit hard by the HoReCa channel problems.

Analysts believe that, assuming the current trends, the value of Polish agri-food exports will most likely exceed EUR 33 billion in 2020, so it will set a new record, because after a temporary decline in April, the value of Polish agri-food exports is clearly growing annually. In the period January-August, it amounted to EUR 21.9 billion, which means an increase by 6% compared to the corresponding period of 2019.

Polish agri-food exports have so far remained immune to the effects of the pandemic, but its second wave remains an important risk factor.

Stocks of apples in Poland

At the beginning of November, the largest stocks of apples were in Poland - 1,890,000 tonnes. The second place was taken by Italy - 1,512,583 t, and the third by France - 783,913 t. In Germany - 367,919 t of apples were delivered to the cold store, in Spain - 205,099 t, in the Netherlands - 164,178 t and in Belgium - 124 274 t. There were 5,227,542 tons of apples in the EU cold stores as of November 1.

In November, the most varieties of Golden Delicious were stored in the cold stores of European fruit growers - 530 960 t, Gala 442 973 t, Idared - 293 340 t, Red Jonaprince - 280 528 t, Szampion - 201 279 t.

Among the varieties stored in Polish cold stores, Idared - 280,000 t, Red Jonaprince - 220,000 t, Szampion 200,000 t, Golden Delicious - 190,000 t, Gala - 170,000 t, Ligol - 160,000 t and Gloster 90,000 t, dominate. Pinova and Red Delicious - 50,000 tons each and varieties from the Jonagold group - 40,000 tons.
