Reportage International Poultry & Pig Show Japan 2022
The International Poultry & Pig Show (IPPS) Japan 2022, the largest technology fair for the pig and poultry sector in Japan, took place from 27 April to 29 April. This year, products from seven Dutch companies were exhibited at the fair, either at their own booth or jointly with their local agent. Under strict COVID-19 measures, 229 exhibitors took part in the exhibition, attracting 22.664 visitors in 3 days. The next IPPS is scheduled to take place in spring 2024.
Seven Dutch companies represented at the fair were: VDL Jansen, Vencomatic, Hendrix Genetics, Nedap, DSM, MOBA and Topigs Norsvin.
Agricultural Counsellor Denise Lutz and Agricultural Advisor Yuko Saito paid a visit to the various companies who were happy to meet up again with their Japanese agents and customers after 2 years of corona absence. Most interesting takeaway of the exhibition was the sense among the Dutch exhibitors that, although not a topic of significance among the general public in Japan, the interest of the processing industry and retail sector in better living conditions for livestock seems to be nearing a tipping point. Animal welfare is already getting some attention in B2B transactions, although the majority of livestock is still farmed in conventional housing systems like battery cages for layer hens (94%). A push for more animal welfare would constitute a good opportunity for the Dutch companies supplying livestock housing systems.
