Flower gift trend

Honjo City, Saitama, is in peak season, producing vibrant Princettia flowers for "Good Husband and Wife Day" gifts and Christmas décor. They are growing five varieties, including the popular Pure White and Hot Pink. Symbolizing "compassion," 20,000 pots will be shipped across Japan's Kanto and Chubu regions by the end of November, spreading warmth and joy.

Insect products in the Japanese market

Gryllus, a University of Tokushima venture focused on edible crickets to address global food challenges, has filed for bankruptcy. Social media backlash over cricket use in a school lunch caused cancellations, leaving the company with unsold inventory. Failed subsidy applications for diversification into livestock and fish feed further impacted operations, forcing Gryllus to cease business.

Researchers from NARO and the University of Tokyo have enhanced the nutritional value of American soldier fly larvae, a potential new protein source. Suppressing a gene that discharges amino acids increased amino acid concentrations in the larvae. This breakthrough addresses the low essential amino acid content, advancing the development of fishmeal-free, insect-based feed as a sustainable alternative to imported fishmeal.

Trends in food prices and restaurants

Japan will see price hikes for 109 food and beverage items in December, bringing 2024's total to 12,520, the smallest in three years. However, 2025 could surpass 2024 with 3,933 items slated for increases early in the year, driven by rising raw material, logistics, and labor costs, impacting bread, alcohol, and processed foods.

A new Sendai restaurant, MUKU, promotes animal welfare by serving dishes made from cruelty-free, sustainably sourced ingredients. The restaurant features pasture-raised pork, cage-free eggs, and sustainable seafood. Inspired by global animal welfare practices, The operator hopes to connect ethical producers with consumers and raise awareness in Japan through delicious, responsibly crafted meals.

Low vegetable consumption in Japan

According to a health ministry survey, the average daily vegetable intake for Japanese adults hit a record low of 256 grams in 2023, far below the government target of 350 grams. Consumption was lowest among individuals in their 20s, with less than 30% of all age groups meeting the target. The ministry plans to increase support to boost intake.
